Bridge Repair project on IL 53 over the Kankakee River
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that a bridge repair project will occur along IL 53 over the Kankakee River in Wilmington starting, weather permitting, March 15.
In order to complete the work, traffic will be reduced to one lane, with alternating traffic directions controlled by temporary traffic signals. Work will involve repairing sections of the existing bridge deck and placing a new latex concrete overlay on the bridge deck, which provides a better riding surface on the bridge. IDOT had postponed repair work to this structure until work on I-55 over the Des Plaines River was completed in 2014. The work is expected to be completed, weather permitting, by Sept. 1, 2015.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
